Advancing Tobacco-Free Living Through LIFT
The Living Independent from Tobacco (LIFT) project shares the belief of the California Tobacco Prevention Program and many others working in tobacco education throughout the State: All individuals have the right to be protected from the dangers of secondhand smoke (SHS) where they live, work, and play.
Meeting LIFT Goals
LIFT was a project funded by the California Tobacco Prevention Program from April 2024 to June 2025. The project worked to support tobacco control efforts in Trinity or Modoc counties to adopt and implement a policy that 1) prohibits smoking and vaping from multi-unit housing complexes and 2) eliminates smoking in all outdoor areas without designated smoking areas or distances.
LIFT will use the following strategies to achieve these goals:

- Conducting educational outreach and policy building infrastructure,
- Collaborating with funded agencies throughout California,
- Building relationships with key stakeholders,
- Developing region and population-specific educational materials, using local and culturally relevant media and newsletters to inform the public of project activities and increase local support,
- Using strategic planning sessions with target groups and local tobacco control advocates, and providing technical assistance to assist with the creation and implementation of smokefree policies.
